my turn, they shut the window.
Where had they gone? Coffee
break, of course.
The officials finally re-opened
the window and I was able to
progress to the next trailer — the
entrance stamp. Suddenly, our not-
very-helpful tour guide reappeared
and offered to help speed things
along. He took all of our passports
together in a group and gave them
to a Jordanian official. Things
moved smoothly for a little while
until another group came and
handed in their passports. Instead
of putting them on the bottom and
following the first-come-first-serve
principle, the official simply put the
new group on top of our passports
and continued his work. This lead
to an additional two-hour wait, but
by then who was counting? Please
note: At this moment, many peo-
ple regret ever coming to Jordan in
the first place; but your patience
will pay off and the trip is worth-
while.
After a quick security check
(nothing like the Israelis'), we le-
gitimately entered Jordan and
boarded our tour bus. We first were
taken to a place called Wadi Ram.
Historically it is where Lawrence
of Arabia rode across, descending
down from the mountain. There we
were served a very delicious meal
of humus, babaganoosh (eggplant
salad), french fries and salad for 3
dinars each. They graciously gave
us tea or coffee on the house but the
cups were only big enough for two
sips. If your thirst was not yet
quenched, you had to pay for an ad-
ditional two sips. Then we were
taken on the backs of raggedy old
pick-up trucks driven by Bedouins,
who raced us across the desert. The
scenery was beautiful but very sim-
ilar to the mountains of the Negev.
When we got back to the restau-
rant, there was a wild session of
belly dancing taking place.
We then drove two hours to Pe-
tra and stayed in a beautiful,
new, clean four-star hotel called
the King's Inn. A smiling portrait
of King Huessin greeted us in the
foyer. There was a mix-up with
the rooms so half of our group
had to move to another hotel, the
Forum, which is a little more lux-
urious. A hot buffet dinner was
served where we were joined by
two other tours of Israelis who
had just come from Amman.
Some of the Israelis seemed to
forget where they were and kept
speaking Hebrew to our Jordan-
ian waiters who did not under-
stand one word.
During dinner we met a family
of Palestinian hotel developers who
were building a five-star hotel in
Petra. They were very excited
about the peace and its economic
prospects.
After dinner there was no choice
but to go to sleep as Petra's sur-
rounding city (Wadi Musa) is void
of evening activity.
The next morning we were
brought to the entrance of Petra,
