The second research project —
referred to as One-Dimensional
Electron Systems and coordi-
nated by Dr. Udi Meirav of the
department of condensed matter
physics — is aimed at resolving
some of the frontier issues in con-
temporary physics by creating
and studying unique ultra-small
structures in which electrons
move in one dimension. In addi-
tion to serving as a valuable re-
search tool, such structures may
form the basis of future electronic
and electro-optical devices. In
particular, one-dimensional
semiconductor lasers promise to
be highly efficient, while one-di-
mensional field-effect transistors
may prove superior to conven-
tional ones in various respects.
The special one-dimensional
systems needed for this project,
conducted by five subgroups of
scientists, will be created using
state-of-the-art equipment at
Weizmann Institute's Joseph H.
and Belle R. Braun Center for
Submicron Research. Parts of
the project will be carried out in
collaboration with scientists from
the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem.
Professor Ullman holds the
Ruth and Samy Cohn Chair of
Computer Science, and Dr.
Meirav, the Corinne S. Koshland
Career Development Chair.

Chechnya Jews
Flee To Israel
Jerusalem (JTA) — Sixteen Jews
fleeing the ongoing fighting in the
breakaway Russian republic of
Chechnya have arrived in Israel
on a flight organized by the Jew-
ish Agency.
Agency officials said seven of
the refugees had fled the Chechen
capital of Grozny while it was un-
der fire from Russian forces.
Among those arriving in Israel
was a 16-year-old girl who lost
her mother during the fighting in
Grozny.
The refugees had fled to
Nalchik, a city some 100 miles
east of Grozny, where they stayed
with relatives or in hotels while
agency emissaries helped them
sort out the necessary exit papers.
The flight was the second
arranged by the agency to bring
Chechen refugees to Israel. An-
other 32 refugees arrived in Is-
rael late last month.
In Tel Aviv, dozens of members
of a group known as the Islamic
Movement demonstrated outside
the Russian Embassy, protesting
Moscow's assault on the Chechen
people and comparing it to Nazi
policies against the Jews.
