Schools. Her association with the
Detroit schools spanned decades,
beginning with a job as a home-
room teacher at Thomas Ele-
mentary School. She taught at
Newton, Finney High School, Re-
naissance High School and in
1968 was promoted to her last po-
sition as supervisor. Ms. Herman
who was born in Czechoslovakia,
came from a prominent family of
rabbis and scholars. When the
Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia,
she and her parents made plans
to leave their homeland. Her fa-
ther went ahead to Manchuria
with the hope of finding work and
Ms. Herman and her mother fol-
lowed 15 months later. In 1946,
the Herman family emigrated to
the United States. They settled
in Detroit and Ms. Herman be-
gan studying languages at Mary-
grove College. After graduating
with a major in Spanish and a
minor in French, she attended
Wayne State University's grad-
uate school and received her mas-
ters' degreees in French and hu-
manities. As supervisor, she
instigated many innovative pro-
grams for the students of Detroit.
She created a foreign language
week, immersion weekends for
French and Spanish students,
computer programs and foreign
language clubs. She was a mem-
ber of Congregation Beit Kodesh,
an active member of Hadassah,
American Zionist Movement, the
Delta Kappa Gamma Society In-
ternational, and the Czech Soci-
ety of Greater Detroit, and a girl
scout troop leader for the last 30
years. Contributions may be di-

KATHERINE LEFKOFSKY
HERRICK, 78, of West Bloom-
field, died Jan. 20. Mrs. Herrick
was the former president of K.
Lefkofsky Wholesale Meats. She
