osher food is a billion-dol-
lar business. And it's not
just for Jews. Products
ranging from diet to mul-
ti-ethnic convenience foods are
sought after by 4 million non-
Jewish consumers. Muslims fol-
low similar dietary laws, and
vegetarians and the lactose in-
tolerant look for "parve" items.
Others perceive kosher-certified
products as superior and choose
these over others in the market-
place.
Even Paul Newman realizes
the value of a kosher certification;
most of his salad dressings and
salsas are now kosher. Here are
some of the best new kosher prod-
ucts you'll be seeing in the near
future.
• B. Manischewitz Co. leads
the pack with new Passover prod-
ucts. The newest product under
the Passover Gold label is Pizza
Mix. Is this really Passover food?
Absolutely. Brand-
new for Passover
are Mom's Helper
cake mixes —
fudge
and
Blondie mixes
with frosting
and sprinkles.
Norman Rock-
well-type nostalgia
labels will doubtless
grab the whole family.
• Gefilte Fish Loaves:
Friedman's Fish comes out on
top for taste and home-like tex-
ture. A well-seasoned, chopped
mixture of white fish and a lit-
tle pike, with just a hint of sweet-
ness, the mixture may be sliced,
baked, fried or rolled into balls
and boiled. The produce contains
no preservatives and is kosher for
Passover. Suggested retail price
for a 1 1/2-pound loaf is $6.75.
• Silver Goat Cheese and
Laban: The Galilee Cheese Corp.
is a well-established company im-
porting a broad range of excellent
cheeses. Laban in a jar is an ex-
quisite satiny yogurt topped with
a layer of superb olive oil. Just a
dab would elevate the most ordi-
nary fruit salad or crust of bread
to a gourmet delight.
• Vegetable Purees: Mori-
ta's, an Argentine company, has
introduced this all-natural prod-
uct. Celery, beets, spinach, arti-
choke, asparagus and sweet red
peppers. Terrific timesaver and
flavor enhancer for soups, sauces,
salad dressings, and a smooth
sandwich spread. A hot seller in
Israel, these purees are now im-
ported to the United States by
Regal Gate Inc. of Dobbs Ferry,
N.Y.
• Pecan Granola/Orange
Spice Pumpkin Bread: The
Baker's, Milford, N.J., produces

12 varieties of bread and rolls.
Two new items have been added
— a nicely flavored, soft crusted
Orange Spice Pumpkin Bread,
and wheat-free and salt-free
Pecan Granola. Besides the
kosher certification, "Pas Yisroel"
is prominently displayed. This. C
means the ovens are lit by a rab-
bi. Suggested retail price is 1
pound for $4.99.
• Venison and Free Range
Chickens: Wise Kosher Natur-
al Poultry Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y.,
has expanded to include farm-
raised glatt kosher venison from
Musicon Inc. N.Y. Top quality
and low cholesterol, the venison
is truly gourmet.
• Nut Pastes and Nut But-
ters: The American Almond
Products Co., Brooklyn, N.Y., has
broadened its basics to include
hazelnut, pecan, pistachio and
walnut pastes; cashew, pistachio
and filbert butters. A real time-
saver for tortes, danish pastries,
cookies and coffee cakes.
• Shufra Halvah: Chunks
of pistachio nuts folded into
thick old-fash-
ioned rolls make
this variety even
more addictive
to the halvah
lover.
• Du Vrai
Sirio de Liege:
A thick, dark, de-
licious "butter" of
pears, dates and apples,
sweetened with sugar. Imported
by Belgium's Best Ltd., Kens-
ington, Md.
• Nan: Kontos Food Inc., Pa-
terson, N.J., has introduced this
popular Indian flat bread,
sprayed with lots of oil and baked
in clay ovens. Heat, eat and serve
with curries, stews and spicy
soups.
K
• Fruili Sorbets: From exot-
ic passionfruit, mango and wild-
berry to the down-home baked
apple and lemon, outstanding
blends of fresh fruit purees and
fruit juices. All, except for choco-
late mint, are fat-free.
• Grappa, Port, Scotch
Whiskey: Cannel-produced bev-
erages. Kosher liqueurs from
Bartemura, Italy, include Sam-
bucco and hazelnut, and there's
a very fine scotch, bearing Or-
thodox kosher certification from
Manchester, England. Soon to
come — a single malt, aged three
years.
• Smoked Kippers: These
kosher smoked herrings are
available from Export Packers
Co. Ltd., Ontario, Canada. Tan,
plump, with the strong smoky fla-
vor that comes from oak and/or
