lose six weeks of the building sea-
son," Ms. Lange said.
Proponents believe the first
bond election failed because of
last year's confusion in Lansing,
when lawmakers wiped out prop-
erty taxes as the major funding
source for public schools without
a substitute in place. The even-
tual passage of Proposal A shift-
ed the burden to an increased
sales tax as the major mechanism
for school funding.
David Meldman, a West
Bloomfield attorney, is hoping
voters will once again reject the
bond issues.
He is treasurer of the Citizen's
Alliance For Better Education
and cites the "dishonest nature
of the election."
"How can you hold an election
in the middle of the winter, four
months after it was defeated?"
Mr. Meldman said. "It's manipu-
lative and dishonest and I don't
see a legitimate, honest explana-
tion. I think they are exploiting
a need."
Mr. Meldman, who serves on
the West Bloomfield Wetlands
Board and last summer ran an
unsuccessful campaign against
state Rep. Barbara Dobb, said the
bonds are inflated and the schools
could be run more cost effectively.

BUICK

— David Meldman

Mr. Meldman believes some-
thing should be done to address
the enormous growth in the dis-
trict, but he does not feel the
bonds address such needs.
According to Ms. Lange, the
cost of the bond issue and each
individual project was verified by
the state.
The Walled Lake Consolidat-
ed School District is one of the
fastest growing in the state. Cur-
rently, 4,300 single family homes
are under construction.
Bond proponent and chair of
Citizens for Walled Lake Schools
Randee Bloom said based on the
number of recorded births, the
district can expect about 500 new
students a year.
"This is our responsibility,"
said Ms. Bloom, whose daughter
has 33 classmates in her fifth-
grade class. "Someone paid for us
and now it's our turn.
"It's within our grasp. Our tax-
es were cut tremendously by Pro-
posal A. If both bond issues pass,
our school taxes will still be less
than in 1993."
Karen Lehman Boren's two
children attend Walled Lake
schools and once again she will
support passage of the bonds.
Last year she saw her proper-
ty taxes decrease by over $2,000.
If the bonds pass, she figures
her taxes will increase by about
$300.
