We're Seeking

Why would anyone want
to buy leather...
from anywhere else but Harper?

You do know someone who has
bounced back from adversity —

If you do, we'd like to know
about it and honor this remark-

ness supplement.
We'll be taking nominations for
one week, through Friday, Jan. 27.
If you wish to nominate some-
one by mail, write to Steve Stein

Natuzzi LEATHER

The Bank of Israel has pur-
chased $12 million in bonds from
the public as a means to inject
cash into the economy.
This is the first time the cen-
tral bank has intervened in the
long-term bond market. Up un-
til this year, the central bank
supplied enough money to the
economy through its tenders to
commercial banks.
Failure to provide enough cash
to accommodate for economic
growth and inflation would re-
sult in higher interest rates.
The Bank of Israel will not in-
tervene as a buyer in the long-
term bond market more than
once a month.

Bank Leumi
Sells Its Share

Bank Leumi of Israel has signed
an agreement to sell its 50 per-
cent share in Leumi-Credit Bank
RT to its partner, Hungarian
Credit Bank.
Banking sources forecast Bank
Leumi's losses in Hungary will
reach more than $10 million, the
bank's initial investment in the
subsidiary. The subsidiary was
established in 1991.
Israel Porat, head of Bank Leu-
mi's international division, said
the division will continue to direct
clients to Hungarian Credit Bank.
In addition, the two banks have
established a joint company
which will collect classified debt.
Leumi-Credit Bank's losses in
1993 totaled $4.8 million. The
Hungarian subsidiary continued
to register losses in 1994, mainly
as a result of the deterioration in
the Hungarian economy and in
the credit portfolios of Hungari-
an banks in general.
