EARLIER this week, the 125-

member Oakland County Busi-
ness Roundtable presented its
recommendations for improving
the county's business climate.
The proposals which are adopt-
ed by the county along with the
strategies for implementation will
be unveiled June 21 at the
Roundtable's next meeting.
The 125-member Roundtable
was formed by Oakland County
Executive L. Brooks Patterson
shortly after he took office in
1993. One of the members is Jack
Robinson, president and chair-
man of the board of Perry Drugs.

NEW SECURITY software

called WebSession has been un-
veiled by Branch Information
Services of Ann Arbor, which pro-
vides Internet advertising and
on-line services.
`The main benefit of this soft-
ware is the ability to keep confi-
dential information from being
transferred to unauthorized in-
dividuals, making it as safe-
guarded as any business
transaction," said Jon Zeeff, pres-
ident and founder of Branch Mall,
one of the first shopping malls on
the Internet.

A WORKSHOP on the "Essen-

tials of Empowerment" will be
held Jan. 23 at the Kellogg Cen-
ter on the campus of Michigan
State University in East Lans-
ing.
The Hard Times Cafe, a Clare
County program which helps in-
digent persons develop skills and
habits to get them back into the
work world, is the sponsor of the
workshop.
Proceeds from the workshop
will help fund the operation of the
Hard Times Cafe. For further in-

THE FAMILY Business Coun-

cil (FBC) will hold a special an-
niversary meeting from 9 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Radisson
Hotel in Southfield.
Author/educator Dr. Kenneth
Kaye and Detroit Free Press busi-
ness columnist Doron Levin will
be guest speakers and there will
be a presentation on family lim-
ited partnerships.
The FBC is southeastern
Michigan's only non-profit pro-
gram designed solely to assist
family-owned businesses.
The anniversary meeting is
free to FBC members and their

WORKSHOPS for small busi-

ness owners and managers are
being offered by the Business De-
velopment Center (BEDC).

They include How To Start A
Business (9-11:30 a.m. Jan. 25);
Financing Your Business (1-3:30
p.m. Jan. 25); Export Training (9
a.m. to noon Jan. 26); How To De-
velop a Marketing and Commu-
nications Plan (9-11:30 a.m. Jan.
31); and Computer Training
(varying schedules).
All the workshops will be held
at the BEDC office in Troy. To
register or request further infor-
mation, call the BEDC, (810) 952-
5800 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Monday through Friday.
The BEDC is a non-profit or-
ganization in partnership with
Walsh College and Oakland
Community College which pro-
vides small businesses with the
resources they need to help them
grow.

SENIORS ages 55 and older
with income under $30,000 can
take advantage of free tax prepa-
ration offered by the Southfield
Public Library and the American
Association of Retired Persons
(AARP).
AARP tax counselors will an-
swer questions and help fill out
forms from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Feb. 20 at the library on a first-
come, first-served basis. No ad-
vance registrations will be
accepted.
The library is located in the
Southfield Civic Center complex,
26000 Evergreen. For further in-
formation on the tax preparation
assistance, call the library, (810)

TAXPAYERS can receive free

assistance in preparing their fed-
eral tax forms in a program of-
fered by the Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) and the Southfield
Public Library.
IRS advisers will answer ques-
tions and help fill out forms (with
a 15-minute time limit) on a first-
come, first-served basis. No ad-
vance registrations will be
accepted.
Here are the times, dates, and
locations for the sessions: 6:30-
8:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Beech
Woods Reading Center; 10 a.m.
to noon Feb. 25 at the Southfield
Library; and 10 a.m. to noon
March 18 at the library.
