The marchers gathered at the
middle school on a raw, gray but
dry morning. Many arrived via a
shuttle service from the high
school provided by General Mo-
tors, one of nearly 60 sponsors of
United We Walk.
After the ribbon-cutting cere-
mony, the throng crossed Or-
chard Lake Road to the east side
of the street and walked on the
sidewalk to the high school.
West Bloomfield police cars
and an EMS unit escorted the
crowd. Children either walked
with their parents or a designat-
ed adult.
After the marchers were treat-
ed to a complimentary lunch at
the high school, the rally was held
in a packed auditorium.
Rabbi Bennett, who became
Temple Israel's fourth rabbi last
July, spoke to the crowd for a few
minutes about brotherhood, say-
ing it's essential for everyone to
practice it at school, at work and
at home.
"I really enjoyed being a part
of this project," Rabbi Bennett
