Somewhat self-congratulatory,
Daniella Harpaz reports in the
current issue of Jewish Cur-
rents that a question she posed
at a conference on the Jewish
press held at Brandeis Univer-
sity last fall "was the hot topic at
dinner with the conference
guests. They were surprised to
hear they were discussing a.
phantom issue all day; that if
they did not find a way to connect
with the younger generation in
some way that made Judaism
necessary, all would be lost."
Her question, which she pre-
ceded by giving her credentials
as a recent student and now an
instructor at Brandeis: "I have
a close relationship with these
`younger people' you are trying to
reach. You want to teach them
through newspapers and jour-
nals. Don't you know they don't
read?"
She explained that only one-
third of her students say they
read a daily or weekly news-
paper, and it is usually a univer-
sity student paper.
Ms. Harpaz's query followed
such comments as:
• "A strong, independent
newspaper helps pump life and
ideas back into the community....
The question of the hour, of the
decade, is, 'Can Judaism, can
Jewish life in America, can being
Jewish compete in the market-
place of ideas and beliefs, systems
and lifestyles now and into the
next generation?"
