Jewish neoconservatives be saying if Louis Far- rakhan had written a book that made the New York Times best-seller lists and claimed that Jewish financiers such as the Rothschilds, Paul Warburg and Jacob Schiff were leaders in a two-century-old Freemasons-Communist-Banker conspiracy to exploit American taxpayers and the members of the armed forces in America by stirring up deficit-funded wars?" The answer is obvious to Michael Lind, who poses the above question in The New York Review of Books while critiquing books by TV evange- list Pat Robertson, head of the Christian Coalition: They would denounce, counterattack and is- sue blistering reports. But instead, Jewish conserva- tives are not only silent about what Mr. Lind perceives as the anti-Semitism of Rev. Robertson and his Christian right pals, they make deft excuses for their al- liances with them. As Mr. Lind wrote: "The chief motive for con- servative appeasement of Robert- son and the religious right is strategic.... Many Jewish neo- conservatives value fundamen- talist support for American military and economic subsidies to Israel. Writing in Commentary in 1984, Irving Kristol called on American Jews to recognize that American Protestant fundamen- talists are 'strongly pro-Israel.' Excusing an evangelical leader who said that God did not hear the prayers of Jews, Kristol wrote, 'Why should Jews care about the theology of a funda- mentalist preacher?... What do such theological abstractions matter as against the mundane fact that this same preacher is vigorously pro-Israel?" To Mr. Lind, theology, not pol- itics, drives fundamentalists. And their theology, he wrote, is anti- thetical to long-term Jewish in- terests. Rev. Robertson's 1991 book, 'The New World Order," for instance, cleaves to a sinister plot that links the adoption of Ma- sonic imagery for the Great Seal of the United States, the French Revolution's Reign of Terror, the Communist Manifesto's publica- tion, and the call for a new world order by Woodrow Wilson in 1917 and Nelson Rockefeller in 1968 to a cabal of rich, Jewish bankers. Also, in his 1990 book, "The New Millennium," Rev. Robert- son stated that, in the supposed- ly rapidly approaching Last Days of Christianity, Israel will be de- Pat Robertson stroyed after it is abandoned by the United States because Amer- ican Christians will have angrily turned against "cosmopolitan, liberal, secular Jews" who want "unrestricted freedom for smut and pornography and the mur- der of the unborn." Mr. Lind concluded that "con- servative Jews who defend Rob- ertson ... apparently do not realize that fundamentalists' support for Israel is not incompatible with dislike and resentment of Amer- ican Jews, especially liberal Jews .... Robertson's theories about Jewish bankers and Jewish rev- olutionaries are central to his con- spiracy theory, which in turn is central to his vision of his own destiny, his movement and his ambitions for the American right and the Republican Party and the United States of America." King Meets Farrakhan Not to appear too obsessed with the statements, sentiments and prevarications of the man whom Michael Lind was certain would infuriate Jewish conservatives if he had written the same tracts as Rev. Pat Robertson, but those of you who missed Louis Far- rakhan on CNN's "Larry King Live" show on Dec. 13 should know that the Nation of Islam minister again denied he dislikes Jews.
