mistic," she said.
For Hildy Starr, the event was
her first Institute for Single Jew-
ish Mothers experience.
"Everyone was so upbeat and
happy. I really enjoyed myself,"
she said. She plans to attend oth-
er programs in the future.
"What I really enjoy most
about (the programs) is that
every event revolves around a
Jewish theme," she said.
The institute is planning a
wide variety of similar small
events in order to attract di-
vorced, separated or widowed
women with different interests.
This is based on the input of fo-
cus group meetings in the corn-
munity that asked for more
educational and entertainment
events.
Last month, a Chanukah par-
ty for the mothers and their chil-
dren attracted dozens of families.
A Shabbat dinner will be
scheduled for next month and an
evening at the Jewish Ensemble
Theatre is set for March 1. ❑

For Families.
About 30 divorced, separated
or widowed Jewish women gath-

Charach Epstein Museum/
Gallery in the Jewish Communi-
ty Center for a discussion enti-
tled "Art Is All About Us."
The evening event featured a
tour by museum director Sylvia
Nelson of the works of Samuel
Bak.
Ms. Nelson explained that Mr.
Bak's father was killed in a con-
centration camp when Mr. Bak
was young. He and his mother
were forced to live in the Zilna
ghetto in the Ukraine near the
border of Poland where his moth-
er continued to seek art direction
for her young, but talented son.
"Some people come here and
see the exhibit as being tremen-
dously depressing," Ms. Nelson
said, noting that the artist uses
Holocaust imagery in his works.
"But this group saw it as uplift-
ing, that the mother could tri-
umph over such tragedy for the
good of her child."
The tour was followed by a dis-
cussion group.
"It was a fabulous evening,"
said Ilene Hochbaum of the In-
stitute for Single Jewish Moth-
ers. "The exhibition said a lot
about the survival of the human
spirit, something I think the
women can relate to."
