ong after the comfortable
walking shoes and warm
coats had been put away
and the speeches and songs
had ended, one impression re-
mained in the minds of many of
the participants in the first Mar-
tin Luther King Jr. United We
Walk march in West Bloomfield.
"What a great crowd! I'd guess
about 800 people marched," said
Temple Israel Rabbi Joshua Ben-
nett, who was among the walk-
ers Monday and one of three local
clergymen who spoke at a post-
march rally at West Bloomfield
High School.
"We expected about 400-500
people. We actually had closer to
1,000, probably around 800," con-
firmed Beth Borson, assistant
general chairperson for United
We Walk and a trustee on the
West Bloomfield school board,
which closed the district's schools
for the first time because of the
holiday.
"I talked to so many people
during the day who told me they

really enjoyed the event," Ms.
Borson said. "One was a mother
of a West Bloomfield High School
student who had just moved here
about five weeks ago from Eng-
land. She and her daughter de-
cided to take part in the event to
see what our community is all
about."
All three of Robert and Beth
Borson's children marched along
with their mother. Lauren, 15, is
a sophomore at West Bloomfield
High School; Adam, 12, a sixth-
grader at Orchard Lake Middle
School; and Josh, 7, is a second-
grader at Ealy Elementary
School.
Lauren participated in a rib-
bon-cutting ceremony, in front of
the middle school, which
launched the walk and she greet-
ed marchers at the door at the
high school after they completed
the one-mile jaunt north along
Orchard Lake Road.
