O
of every family can afford
to send its children to sum-
mer camp. That's why
hundreds of thousands of
dollars in scholarship money is
available for those who are will-
ing to take the time to apply for
it.
"It's been our policy for 92
years that no child will be denied
a camp experience because of his
or her family's inability to pay for
it," said Harvey Finkelberg, ex-
ecutive director of Tamarack
Camps.
Of Tamarack's approximately
1,800 campers each year, about
two-thirds pay the full tuition and
the other one-third receives par-
tial or full scholarships, Mr.
Finkelberg said.
Last year, some $680,000
worth of scholarships were dis-
tributed, with $400,000 coming
from the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
Two-thirds of Tamarack's bud-
get comes from campers' fees, Mr.
Finkelberg said. It costs between
$1,800 and $2,200 to attend one
of Tamarack's camps for one
month.
About 1,500 youngsters attend
Jewish Community Center day
camps annually, "and more than
half are usually on scholarship,
totaling about $300,000" said
JCC membership director
Sharon Bender.
"We try to help all families
based on individual needs and ex-
traneous circumstances," Ms.
Bender said. "We want children
to have an enjoyable camp sea-
son and we want to try to make
it comfortable financially for their
parents."
To be eligible for a
JCC camp
scholar-
ship,
a

child must be from a Jewish fam-
ily and a member of the JCC.
A suburban Oakland County
family who wished to remain
anonymous has taken advantage
of both Tamarack and JCC schol-
arships for several years. The
money has helped send the cou-
ple's two children to camp.
"Parents who want to send
their children to a JCC or Tama-
rack camp should not be too
proud to look into scholarships,"
the mother said.
"Sure, it takes a lot of time
to fill out the forms. But it's real-
ly worth it. What's nice is all the
information you supply is con-
fidential — nobody has to know
about it."
