are spending less time at camp.
"Kids used to go to camp for
eight weeks," Mr. Schulman
said. "Now, most go for part of
the summer, so a camp needs to
double the number of kids it at-
tracts."
The end of camp last summer
also meant the end of summer
camping experiences for those
who attended Sea-Gull. While
the organization still offers
teen trips and retreats, the
Schulmans are no longer in the
day-to-day summer-camp busi-
ness.
Mr. Schulman said the deci-
sion to close Camp Sea-Gull had
nothing to do with competition.
"We were ready for a lifestyle
change," he said.
Day camps are also trying to
attract campers from a finite
group of children.
When the Jewish Communi-
ty Center wanted to know what
children and their parents were
looking for in a summer day
camp, they found out the easy
way — they asked, according to
marketing director Barbara Lo-
gan.
The Jewish Community Cen-
ter determined the best way to
entice prospective campers was
to design an eye-catching
brochure highlightingnew sum-
mer opportunities.
Last year's added programs
included sports camps, featuring
instruction by professional ath-
letes; an intensive arts camp; and
a travel adventure to Chicago or
Toronto.
Attracting campers does not
always mean offering different
or exciting opportunities. A
camp can have the top-notch pro-
gram around but, without a
marketing plan, success is ques-
tionable.
Marketing tools are endless.
Videos, slide shows, brochures
and incentives for longtime
campers are a few tricks of the
trade. But the key is a year-
round marketing plan.
Promoting Camp Walden
involves many meetings with
parents, slide presentations
and in- and out-of-state recruit-
ing.
Tamarack has a detailed agen-
da which includes sending
da
brochures and fee schedules
to previous campers in
October and calling them in No-
vember. Brochures are sent to
prospective campers in Decem-
ber.
Another way to stay a step
ahead of the competition is
through long-range planning.
The year 2000 — only five years
away — doesn't seem as far off
as it once did. Camp in the year
2000 may not be like camp in
1995.
In the future, Mr. Finkelberg
predicts shorter sessions, more
specialized programs and the
demise of some of the more
rustic camping opportunities. Li
