Boxer Scotty Buck will put his
6-1 professional record on the line
Jan. 19 when he faces an as-yet-
unnamed featherweight oppo-
nent during the monthly card at
the Palace of Auburn Hills.
Buck, 23, a Farmington Hills
resident who is managed by
Jackie Kallen, knocked out Pete
Cantu in the second round of
their December fight at the
Palace.
Several months earlier, Cantu
handed Buck his lone profes-
sional defeat when he stopped
him on a third-round TKO. Buck
retired briefly after that loss and
flattened Cantu in his return
bout.
The featherweight division is
for boxers who weigh between
126 and 128 pounds. 111

Eric Kaczander moved into the
starting lineup for the Berkley
High School basketball team un-
der the most difficult of circum-
stances.
In a key game against arch-
rival Ferndale, Kaczander was
called upon to replace Kevin
Deighton, the Bears' leading
scorer.
Kaczander, a 6-foot-3 senior,
tallied six points in the Jan. 6 con-
test played in front of a large
crowd at Berkley, but the Bears
dropped a 57-43 decision in an
Oakland Activities Association
Division II opener.
"I was nervous before the
game, but only because it was a
big game. Not because I was tak-
ing Kevin's place," Kaczander
said. "I thought I played all right.
I missed a couple of shots I should
have made."
Kaczander hit three baskets,
with two of the hoops coming late
in the second quarter while
Berkley was trying to rally.
He scored on a put-back with
2:00 left in the first half, cutting
Ferndale's lead to 21-15, and he
sank a short jumper after re-
bounding a missed Berkley free
throw to make it 25-17. Kaczan-
der was fouled on the first buck-
et, but he missed the free throw.
It was his only foul shot of the
game. •
Early in the fourth period,
Kaczander hit a lay-up off an in-
bounds play. By then, Ferndale
was up 47-32.
"I thought Eric did a steady
job," said Berkley coach Steve
Rhoads. "We have a rotation of
eight or nine players when we're
healthy, and Eric always is
among them."
