V. gv; wgr When Parents Get Away CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ LOCAL COLUMNIST Now that the kids are off to sum- mer camp, this could be the per- fect time for mom and dad to take that needed vacation. Jay and Helene Brody of West Bloomfield went to North Car- olina for a family gathering while the kids were at Camp Tamarack last summer. "I felt comfortable because it was a short time. I left word with the camp. But, gener- ally speaking I just wouldn't make a practice of traveling while my kids were at camp," said Mrs. Brody. Leaving word with the camp is important before traveling away from home. Dr. Barry Auster, a Camp Tanuga physician and Southfield dermatologist, believes that parents are readily accessi- ble if they leave a telephone num- ber. "In five years at Camp Tanuga, I can't remember a time when we couldn't get ahold of par- ents. At Tanuga, the parents are calling here all the time. They are very careful," he said. Dr. Auster recommended some health concerns that should be taken care of whether or not the parents travel when the children are at camp. He suggested that parents make sure the health form is updated with the current immunizations. Another key el- ement is to sign a waiver stating that the children are authorized to be treated in an emergency medical situation. According to Sonia Pone, a Birmingham psychotherapist, traveling while your child is at camp depends on the age of the child. "The younger the child is, the greater the need to have con- tact with the parents," said Ms. Pone. She stressed the importance of parents continuing the flow of correspondence through letters. Although Alyssa Martina, pub- lisher of Metroparent magazine, has not gone on vacation while her children are at camp, she be- lieves the idea makes sense. There still can be one stum- bling block — money. Many fam- ilies don't have the extra money to spare after they've paid the camp bill. Vacation Tips • Be accessible if you go on vacation. Leave a telephone number or fax number. • Make sure the health form is updated with current im munizations. • Sign an emergency care treatment waiver. • Keep sending letters to camp while on vacation.
