Parish Unitarian Universalist

"Opening the synagogue for a
mass meeting was an act of
courage," Mr. Johnson said. 'The
clinics have received over 200
bomb threats in recent years, and
Rabbi Lipofs decision to hold the
rally at Ohabei Shalom put the
synagogue at risk."
Mr. Johnson said several of his
parishioners have had relation-
ships with the clinics, either as
patients, employees or volun-
teers.
"We all know the high level of
fear that stalks these clinics. To
walk by them day after day and
to hear the rhetoric about how
the people who work there are
killers has set the tone for this
kind of domestic terrorism," Mr.
Johnson said.

of violence and to declare it is sin
for people to use violence to re-
solve difference. Religious lead-
ers must encourage the honest
and vigorous expression of dif-
ferences within the context of tol-
erance. Murder in the name of
life, or any other cause, is a des-
ecration of God's name," he said.
Similar statements decrying
the murders at the Brookline clin-
ics were made by the New Eng-
land Region of the American
Jewish Congress, the Jewish
Community Relations Council of
Greater Boston and the New
England chapter of the Anti-
Defamation League. The suspect
in the killings, New Hampshire
resident John Salvi, is in feder-
al custody.
