At Harper, Low Price is a Design Element. common commitment to expos- ing as many college students as possible to the real experience of Israel, as opposed to the Israel of their imagination or the Israel in news reports," said Michael Brooks, executive direc- tor of the University of Michigan Hillel. The three organizations in- clude: U-M Hillel, Michigan State University Hillel and Hillel of Metro Detroit (which includes Wayne State University, Oak- land University, Oakland Corn- munity College, Lawrence Technological University, Uni- versity of Detroit, as well as all metro Detroit Jewish students and young adults between the ages of 18 and 30.) Jeff Kaye, the shaliach in the Michigan/Israel Connection of- fice of the Jewish Federation, be- lieves the Hillel Mission holds significance for the community at large. "These three Hillels are major feeders into the general commu- nity," he says. Miriam Starkman, executive director of Hillel of Metro Detroit, agrees. "One of our goals will be to talk about how we can use this trip to bring back to our communities and campuses an awareness of Israel and a heightened interest in Judaism," she said. The cost of the trip is $1,499 — $996 less than the Michigan Mir- acle Mission. Participants can ap- ply for scholarships through their synagogues, B'nai B'rith Hillel of- fices or the Michigan/Israel Connection of Federation. Appli- cations for the trip will be dis- tributed soon. Plannei-s are limiting the group to 45 people. They say the Hillel mission will not compete with the Michigan Miracle Mis- sion, which already has a wait- ing list. Originally, the Hillel directors wanted to reserve a bus on the Miracle Mission for students and young adults, but the cost proved too steep for people in that age group, they say. Instead, direc- tors of the Miracle Mission sug- gested that the Hillels plan a trip of their own. The Hillel Mission will take place after spring term ends for most schools. Travelers may take up to a six-month extension to the trip if they wish to spend their en- tire vacation — or subsequent se- mester — in Israel. The student/young adult mission will be staffed by two Hillel employees. Planners cur- rently are drafting an itinerary, which likely will include many interactive outdoor events, like rappelling in the Judean desert, as well as canoeing and horseback riding in the Golan Heights. Participants will stay in Jerusalem and northern Israel. HILLELS page 24 Natuzgi LEATHER Three piece sectional as shown Compare at $4,350.00 NOW $2,295.00 545-3600 FURNIP HAR TUER RE 916 N.
