"He's got a good window of op-
portunity as long as he remains
stable," Fred Morganroth said on
Tuesday. "He passed the opti-
mum safe point (on the heart
pump). Now it's a matter of his
determination and how long his
body can respond. Finding a
heart is very critical and has to
be done very soon."
Last weekend, Erik had corn-
plications — a high fever and
complications with his blood— he
quickly overcame both.

Erik Morganroth: The waiting game.
Although Erik has been
heavily sedated, he wakes
up periodically and commu-
nicates by nodding, blinking
and forming letters with his
hands. Tubes in his throat
have prevented him from
speaking.
Over the past few weeks,
the Morganroths have held
press conferences to increase
awareness about organ do-
nation.
Since their first confer-
ence, Gift of Life, an organi-
zation that coordinates
organ transplants in Michi-
gan, has received an in-
crease in inquiry calls, said
Tom Beyersdorf, executive
director.
Erik's family said they
are receiving an outpouring
of support.
"People we have not seen in a
long time and people we don't
even know are calling and writ-
ing," Mr. Morganroth said.
`They've been kind enough to put
us in their prayers.
"The most heartening are the
people who say they have decid-
ed to become potential organ
donors." ❑

M
ichigan's three B'nai
B'rith Hillel groups for
college students and
young adults are plan-
ning an unprecedented trip to Is-
rael this spring.
From May 8 to 18, the "Hillel
Mission" will take off on El Al air-
lines from New York en route to
Tel Aviv. While in Israel, the
group at times will meet up
with the community-wide Michi-
gan Miracle Mission, more than
860 metro Detroiters who will
travel throughout Israel May 7
to 17.
The Hillel Mission marks the
first time the three Hillel groups
have combined efforts to sponsor
a trip to Israel.
