The Hermelins
Plans Proceed
For Israel Day
David and Doreen Hermelin will
chair the metropolitan Detroit
Jewish community's annual ob-
servance of Israel's Memorial Day
May 2 and the celebration of Is-
rael's Independence Day May 21.
Working with the Hermelins
in the planning of community-
wide activities and events to com-
memorate the holidays are the
Jewish Federation's Michigan/Is-
rael Connection, the Israel
Memorial Day Committee
chaired by Harlan Lis and Mar-
ta Rosenthal and the Israel In-
dependence Day Committee,
Jeffrey Sternberg and Liz Kan-
ter Groskind.
Mr. Hermelin has chaired
many metropolitan Detroit orga-
nizations. He is the internation-
al campaign chairman of the
State of Israel Bonds, president
of the World ORT Union and
chairman of the Special Adviso-
ry Council of the Michigan Can-
cer Foundation. He serves on the
boards of the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee,
Children's Hospital of Michigan
and the United Way. Mr. Her-
melin is also past chairman of the
Jewish Federation's Allied Jew-
ish Campaign and is currently
vice president.
Mrs. Hermelin also is a past
chairman of the Jewish Federa-
tion's Allied Jewish Campaign,
as well as the past president of
the Jewish Federation Women's
Division. She is active in the Na-
tional Council for Jewish Women
and the State of Israel Bonds.
\) Mrs. Hermelin is a past recipient
of the United Way's Heart of Gold
Award.
Israel's Memorial Day recalls
the memory of those who have
fallen in Israel's wars. Israel's In-
dependence Day commemorates
the founding of the modern state
of Israel in 1948. Both programs
will be held at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center.
