building and various improvisa-
tion techniques. Students find out
about the schedule through an-
nouncements in trade papers and
magazines.
"My husband and I are kind of
understudies now," said Ms. Gel-
man, who stopped her regular
stage performances 10 years ago
when she was pregnant with the
first of the couple's three children.
"Christmas Eve we had what we
called 'The All-Jew Review.' We
had Gelman, Zuckerman,
Schwartz and Kissin performing
because everyone else had the
night off."
The couple, native New York-
ers who met while in their first
semester at the University of Buf-
falo, get back to Michigan about
once a year to visit with his broth-
er Eric, sister-in-law Betsy Ap-
pleton Zuckerman and their two
children, Julie and David.
"I think we instinctively view
the world through a humorous
lens," Ms. Gelman said. "I'm al-
ways drawn to people who have
a funny perception of the world,
and I think Paul is the funniest
person I've ever met.
"It doesn't mean that we don't
take life seriously or aren't sen-
sitive. It's a coping mechanism
that's done unconsciously.
"Because of the profession that
we have been in for so many
years, we have a habit of looking
at TV, making funny comments
and finding that we're writing
shtick. If it's good enough, it will
work itself into the show." ❑

What? Did we hear those nitpicky New Yorkers claiming that
Bruegger's bagels are authentic? Yep, we did. No wonder. They're
old fashioned, kettle-boiled, hearth-baked, and oven-fresh all day.
If self-proclaimed bagel experts say we're hot, we're hot.
Try us. Love us. Or your money back in a New York minute.
