THIRD-CAR page A21

A GMC Suburban with four-
wheel-drive became the third ve-
hicle last fall at the home of Dr.
J. Richard Dunlap. An ortho-
dontist, he chose the Suburban
for its big nine-passenger capac-
ity, making it an excellent car for
vacationing with his family. "We
were always cramped before," he
says, "and the Suburban is ex-
cellent on snow and ice."
Sometimes sports cars become
a third vehicle because of what
John Levin of Bloomfield Town-
ship describes as "midlife." It
was when he turned 40 that
he bought a Jaguar XJ6L. Other
sports car owners are car enthu-
siasts who revel in the fun of dri-
ving one of the frisky demons.
But, like Judie Sherman's
Porsche, many sports cars hiber-
nate in winter. In Grosse Pointe

Some third cars are strictly for
vacation use. The garage at the
Ray Windeckers' cottage stores a
1968 Mustang, used mostly by
Mrs. Windecker for grocery shop-
ping and other short jaunts after
they arrive in their van.
"My mother and father always
left a four-wheel-drive pickup
truck at our summer house," says
Tom Zielinski. "We used it to get
around summer and winter."
A growing group of third-car
households vacation in van con-
versions. They are usually full-
size commercial vans, seating six
to eight, and outfitted as cozy
traveling lounges with window
curtains, captain's chairs and ta-
bles, and sometimes a third seat
that converts into a bed. The
trend to them is observed by Tony
Jerome, general manager of

inducing destination charge. To get total payments, multiply payment amount x 24. Option to purchase at lease end for $25317.25 Mileage
charge of 150 per mile over 24,000 miles. Lessee pays for excessive wear and use.

Farms, the Gary Coletts tuck
away Tish's Mazda Miata con-
vertible from November to April.
"It's a summertime bug," says
Mr. Colett. Currently, Dr.
William Kohen is driving his
daughter Jamie' s front-wheel-
drive compact car to work at a
Pontiac hospital because he
doesn't like to drive his sporty '95
Chevrolet Corvette in wintry con-
ditions.
Among the new entries to
tempt sports car fans will be an
Acura NSX with a targa top (a
hardtop with the portion over the
front seat removable). An all-new
Nissan 200 SX debuts in Janu-
ary as an affordable small per-
formance car with front wheel
drive and a 140-horse-power, 2-
liter, 16-valve engine.
The new all-wheel-drive
Porsche 911 Carrera 4 arrived
last spring. Now it boasts a new
Tiptronic 5 shifter. It's two-sided,
with one side for fully automat-
ic operation and another for man-
ual. Switches on the steering
wheel let the drivels thumbs con-
trol gear changes.
Sporty new twins are the
Chrysler Sebring and Dodge
Avenger, With 2+2 seating
(two in front, two small seats in
back), the front-drive cars han-
dle nicely and replace the
Chrysler LeBaron and Dodge
Daytona.

Tamaroff Automotive Group in
Southfield.
"Those are definitely third-type
vehicles," says Mr. Jerome. "Peo-
ple use them for trips, going to
football games, or skiing up
North."
Then there are third vehicles
known affectionately as the
banger, or beater. John Levin
puts his Jaguar away in winter
and drives a 1985 Volvo for a
banger. "I once drove a 1976
Buick for 14 years," he reports.
"One winter it got slammed twice
in a week and I didn't lose a bit
of sleep over it."
Where does a household with
a two-car garage park the third
car? Ron Ross says, "My daugh-
ter is the lucky one who gets to
park outside." Is it because her
parents have seniority? "No,"
says Mr. Ross, "it's called the deed
to the house."
"The kids' car sits outside,"
says Marilyn Kohen. 1'That's how
you do it."
In Grosse Pointe Farms, Tish
Colett and her daughter Christy
get to park their cars in the com-
parative warmth of the two-car
garage. Dad parks outside. His
motive for doing so is not gal-
lantry, but self-protection. Ex-
plains Gary Colett, "That way I
don't have to worry about help-
ing them get their cars started on
cold mornings."
