Since 1988, the number of leased cars in the United States has risen more than 50 percent, or about one in every five new vehicles per year, according to Consumers Union which pub- lishes Consumer Reports maga- zine. More and more people are choosing to lease their cars for one simple reason: money. Monthly lease payments typically are much lower than those on a loan to buy a new car, and the down payment or up-front costs in a lease are also significantly less. And because you can deduct some lease payment and car-re- lated expenses from your taxes — up to 100 percent if the car is used exclusively for business — the lease option, long attractive to businesses, is becoming more so to consumers. The lease also is especially ap- pealing to those who want luxu- ry vehicles; Consumers Union estimates as many as half of them are now leased. Take a look at some numbers from Ford: a Taurus GL four-door listed for just over $18,000 would require a $1,500 down payment and $395 per month for 48 months to purchase, compared to a refundable security deposit of $300 and $285 a month for a 24- month lease. A Lincoln Mark VDT listed at $34,811 would require a $2,000 down payment and $809 per month for 48 months to buy, compared to a refundable secu- rity deposit of $500 and $494 per month for a 24-month lease. So why doesn't everyone just lease if it's so much less costly? Here are the realities to con- sider: • If you lease a car, you never own it nor do you ever build eq- uity in it. At the end of the lease term, you must give back the car. • You are still responsible for
