Sports and recreation notes from
the Maple/Drake branch of the
Jewish Community Center:
* The JCC varsity basketball
team will challenge an all-star
squad headed by ex-Detroit Pis-
tons standout John Long at 4
p.m. Jan. 28. Earl Cureton, a
member of the 1994 NBA cham-
pion Houston Rockets club, will
be on hand to sign autographs.
Tickets are $5, with the proceeds
benefiting the JCC youth bas-
ketball programs.
In a 67-52 varsity victory over
Mt. Zion Christian on Dec. 19,
Brian Tobin led the way with 12
points and 18 rebounds. He did
not commit a turnover. Evan
Rice contributed two points and
five rebounds in just six minutes
of action.
The varsity and junior varsity
team will be in action Jan. 9, be-
ginning at 6:15 p.m.

Park:
* Boys and girls ages 6-13 can
participate in the Kenny Gold-
man Memorial Youth Co-Ed Bas-
ketball League, which will meet
from 1-4 p.m. Sundays starting
Jan. 8. This is an instructional
program, although teams will be
formed for games. Volunteer
coaches are needed.
* A women's (ages 13 and up)
self-defense workshop will be
held from 7-9 p.m. Jan. 11. Par-
ticipants should wear loose-fit-
ting clothing.
* Men's and women's basket-
ball leagues are offered. The
women will play on Wednesdays
starting Jan. 11 and the men on
Thursdays beginning Jan. 12.
