J ANUARY 6,

"He chose very unusual colors
in his paintings," said Mr.
Granath. "It's typical of Expres-
sionists to use powerful, pure col-
ors."
The most striking and unusu-
al example of that is a tapestry
that shows a rabbi holding a
Torah. He looks solemn and
intense, dressed in black Cha-
sidic garb. But his long, flowing
beard is vivid orange-red, and
the Torah he holds is bright
green.
This tapestry replicates on of
Mane Katz's most famous works,
Rabbi a la Thora, painted in
1961.
The museum also has the orig-
inal painting, and we next de-
scended to a large exhibit room
to see it. In the painting, the rab-
bi's face looks even more intense
and the colors are even more
vivid.
Also in this room we saw the
original of Chagall's work Le Juif
Errant (The Wandering Jew).
Painted in 1923, it shows the
figure of man who walks
slightly hunched over, with a
pole and package slung over his
shoulder.
As we walked through the var-
ied galleries there are five
floors in all — Mr. Granath also
talked about the museum's
remarkable founder and
director, Dr. Ghez. "I have great
admiration for him," he said of
the Tunisian-born art collector
who studied in Marseille and
Rome, owned a factory in Italy,
and worked in the U.S. Depart-
ment of Defense during World
War II.
After the war, Dr. Ghez re-
turned to France. In 1947, he
bought his first painting. "And
all through the 1950s he was col-
lecting more paintings and still
in business," said Mr. Granath.
When he settled in Geneva, he
bought a former small palace, in-
tending to use it as his private
residence. But with so many
paintings in his growing collec-
tion, he decided to make it into a
museum instead.
The Petit Palais opened in
1968, after Dr. Ghez had done
extensive renovation to expand
the property. The museum now
has five floors, with a total of over
350 paintings on permanent dis-
play. "But we change them con-
stantly because we're lending
many paintings to other muse-
ums," said Mr. Granath.
There is especially close coop-
eration with Israel's museums,
Recently, the museum loaned
one of its masterpieces, The
Bridge of Europe, to the Israel
Museum in Jerusalem.
The artistic cooperation began
in 1964, even before the Petit
Palais had opened, when Dr.
Ghez arranged for an exhibit in
Tel Aviv.
Over the years, Dr. Ghez has
maintained close ties with the
Mane Katz Museum in Haifa
