In Honor of the Triumph that is Chanukah
and the Values that the Holiday Represents
Christian blood for the Passover
rites). Frenzied mobs would carry
out bloody pogroms against Jews
on the Passover night of vigil.
Throughout Christian Europe in
the Middle Ages, the "blood ac-
cusation" made the night of
Passover an unhappy time.
'1 The 10 plagues of Egypt were
incorporated in the Passover
Haggadah. Each year Jews cel-
ebrated what became the most
\ popular home observance of Ju-
daism, the Passover seder, and
recalled these plagues as a cen-
tral part of the Haggadah year
after year.
Moses' call to Pharaoh, "Let
my people go that they may serve
me," has become the watchword
of Israel, second only to the
Sh'ma.
Our sedrah this week records
what the Book of Exodus de-
scribes — the going out of Egypt
from slavery to freedom. Rejoice
that our forefathers, especially
Moses, had the courage to take
this stand: Freedom or death!
Moses learned what the free
world later was to learn, that it
is better to die on one's feet than
to live under chains of slavery.
It is not difficult to understand
why the Jewish people are so pas-
sionately devoted to the Passover
observance. This sedrah recalls
a story of liberty and freedom.
Passover might perhaps be called
the first Fourth of July celebra-
tion in human history. But un-
like the secular Independence
Day, this Jewish festival of free-
dom has been given a deeply re-
ligious significance in keeping
with the Jewish idea of freedom.
The exodus was a bold procla-
mation of freedom, a throwing off
of the shackles of the tyrannical
Pharaoh. Passover has come to
celebrate mankind's first freedom
festival. ❑
