and tissue type, as well as other
factors like weight or body size.
A baby, for example, could not re-
ceive an adult's heart.
Some Judaic traditions follow
Jewish law to the letter when it
comes to harvesting organs from
a clinically dead person. Ha-
lachah states that a body cannot
be mutilated after death. The nil-
ing is all appendages must be
present because the body will be
resurrected intact when the Mes-
siah comes.
"This is a subject of much con-
troversy," said Rabbi Shmuel
Irons of the Kollel Institute. "The
brain is dead but the heart is still
beating. To some, that person is
not dead and that would be tak-
ing a life."
But some movements have or
are about to issue position papers
on the subject of organ donation
after clinical death, saying the act
can be done to save life. The act
of saving a life through donation
is so important in some move-
ments that donation is not only
praised, but encouraged.
"If there is a plausible idea that
what we are doing here is life-sav-
ing then we don't regard the re-
moval of the organs as mutilating
the body. It is saving a life," said
Dr. Mark Washofsky, associate
professor of rabbinics at Hebrew
Union College (Reform) in Cincin-
nati.
David Techner hopes that fam-
ilies will consider their own be-
liefs and find out as much as
possible about organ donation be-
fore a hospital staff member
broaches the subject with them.
"You are better of to have all
of your options in front of you and
know how to respond," he said.
"At that time, time is of the
essence." 0
For the election of the Board of Directors will take
place on Thursday evening, January 12, 1995, at
8:00 P.M. at their building, 26640 Greenfield Road,
Oak Park, Michigan.
The following names have been placed in nomination:
