Lorraine had found the original
recipe used in New York cheese-
cake and discovered it was from
Russia, brought here by immi-
grants from that country.
Russian cheesecake is still sold
at the 14 Mile and Campbell lo-
cale, but if people want it they
can call ahead and it'll be brought
to Sweet Lorraine's Cafe on
Greenfield.
The pastries she made in Oak
Park were mainly for bar mitz-
vahs, parties, wine shops, etc. ...
and delivered by Gary on his way
to work.
When they opened in 1984, the
biggest dessert seller was deca-
dent chocolate cake layered with
raspberries and chocolate with a
chocolate glaze on top ... It is still
a big hit, $3.50.
But the top asked-for item to-
day is apple brown Betty served
warm with cinnamon ice cream,
toasted walnuts and caramel
glaze, $4.25.
In 1984, Sweet Lorraine's
served only three desserts ... Now
it has 12, including the always-

popular three layer carrot cake
with cream cheese frosting and
edging of toasted walnuts, $3.50.
Four months after opening in
Southfield, Sweet Lorraine's was
given what none of the others at
the site could obtain ... a liquor li-
cense ... It has 25 wines by the
glass or bottle and 75 just bottle.
The seven-day operation is
open Monday-Thursday, u. a.m.
to 10:30 p.m.; Friday and Satur-
day, 11 a.m. to midnight; Sun-
day, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
There is an eclectic feel to the
surroundings at Sweet Lorraine's
on Greenfield ... Large posters
from the '30s are on walls of tex-
tured rag plaster ... They always
did want the casual look and
maintained this to a degree with
maplewood tables and stone in-
lays ... White linen napkins touch
off the restaurant's cleanliness
as Lorraine and Gary attempt to
maintain a modern American
bistro with a cafe look ... A place
where customers may dress as
they like in the comfortable, in-
timate atmosphere ... Even get a
sandwich, if desired, at both
lunch and dinner ... Varied stain-
colored dividers are between
booths, which also have the dyed
look and resemble Picasso paint-
ings.
In January, Sweet Lorraine's
Cafe on Greenfield will remodel
the outside and also add a bar
with 25 stools ... The present tav-
ern area will be completely torn
apart, eliminating a wall sepa-
rating the rooms ... It will be one

big wide expanse to go along with
the enlarged parking facilities.
Sweet Lorraine's makes its
own no-cholesterol muffins, made
with egg whites, canola oil and
skim milk ... Everyone gets a
muffin and herb roll with rose-
mary ... Dinners also come with
a starch and vegetable .. An
added $2 charge is for the excel-
lent soup or salad at Sweet Lor-
raine's.
Both regular and low fat
entrees are served ... dressings
are made at the restaurant, bot-
tled and sold on the premises.
Nov. 21 was the 10th anniver-
sary of Sweet Lorraine's ... It was
a tough struggle at the beginning
for this very talented and likable
couple ... They hocked everything
... gambled to open by mortgag-
ing their home in Oak Park.
My, how the worm has turned
... Banks that wouldn't lend Lor-
raine and Gary money to open
are today constantly trying to get
some of their business.
It has become one of metro-
politan Detroit's better restau-
rants with a solid consistency
that has never faltered ... And an-

other Sweet Lorraine's, gaining
the same reputation, was opened
in 1993 by them on Ann Arbor's
Detroit Street, managed by
Adam Leemon.
The great strides made by this
couple are deserving of many
plaudits ... quietly going about
their business without fanfare ...
but with very stringent attitudes
about running much more than
just a good restaurant ... Sweet
Lorraine's is another local dining
pride ... and Cupid must be
mighty happy for them, too.
SHE DOESN'T sing in the
sauna at the Jewish Communi-
ty Center Women's Health Club
like Marge Ruby, but Denise
Ruby Ruven has the same red
hair as her mother ... Denise and
hubby Yair recently opened Cobo
Cleaners in Sugar Tree shopping
center, following the life pattern
of dad, Earl Ruby, longtime own-
er/operator of both Cobo and Earl
Ruby Cleaners ... Marge didn't
just sing in the sauna ... Her fine
voice was a standout with Michi-
gan Opera Theatre in Detroit
among other good-listening
stints.
A TOP BET for New Year's
Eve is the David Syme package
at Arriva Italia, 12 Mile between
Mound and Van Dyke in Warren
... $75 per person for dinner,
show, dancing to David's group
and cocktails.
DISA 'N DATA ... Jane's
Place on Lahser is closed and will
soon open as an Italian restau-
rant ... Big Mamous is name of
spot in Pontiac opening in Janu-
ary ... Steve's Back Room, await-
ed by many at the site of former
Sultan's, will be just as the Kel-
ly and Seven Mile operation ...
restaurant and counters for re-
