YOU AND YOUR DOCTOR: PARTNERS FOR GOOD HEALTH project, wear safety goggles or glasses to fend off foreign objects. Seemingly harmless sports like basketball and baseball also pose quite a risk. Encourage children (even your "adult" kids) to sport protective eye wear. Makes a healthy habit of wear- ing sunglasses with UV protec- tion to ward off the the burning effects of the sun. Many eye dis- orders, including cataracts, are known to be compounded by ex- cessive sunlight. The National Society to Pre- vent Blindness reports that toys and burning cigarettes are the two most frequent culprits of eye injuries in children. Avoid buy- ing toys with sharp edges and es- pecially dangerous ones like dart or BB guns. Fortunately for those whose vi- sion tests less than perfect, cor- rective lenses have really come a long way. Those who wear glasses have hundreds of attractive and even fashionable frames to choose from. Kids love to get them in their favorite color and adults can select the ones that best enhance their appearance or create a de- sirable image. But for those who don't like them despite their newfangled looks, or active individuals who find they get in the way, contact lenses have also evolved with the times. Most wearers opt for modern, more comfortable, soft contacts as opposed to rigid which last longer. With daily cleaning this type of contact lens lasts for sev- eral months. Disposable contacts take some grind out of wearing lenses. Dis- posable weeklies are worn around the clock for seven days and then thrown away. They eliminate the need for daily main- tenance, for they are not used long enough to become contami- nated. Better yet, Bausch & Lomb re- ports that daily disposable lens- es should be available by late 1993. Swimmers and other ath- letes will benefit the most from this type of product. In some cases, corrective surgery has replaced lenses as the treatment of choice for near- sighted individuals. Laser surgery and radial keratotomy, a procedure that flattens the cornea, can correct vision per- manently and is becoming in- creasingly convenient and successful. Ortho keratotomy, a nonsur- gical procedure, uses lenses that are worn periodically to reshape the front of the eye and correct vi- sion.
