that keeps her going is the JDF's
slogan: "The only remedy is a
cure."
The good news, according to
Mrs. Coliens, is that there is hope.
"We're very encouraged. This
is our 23rd year as the leading
nongovernmental agency that
contributes to research. That's
amazing, when you consider that
the Juvenile Diabetes Founda-
tion started out as a small group
of concerned parents who want-
ed to do whatever they could to
find a cure," she says. ❑

My Disease

JOSHUA LISS

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Here are some excerpts from
Joshua • Liss's school essay
about juvenile diabetes.

H

ello. I an Joshua Ross Liss.
I am a typical 11-year-old
boy. At least, that is what
everyone thinks. I have a dis-
ease that, if you looked at me,
you would not know that.
have ... You cannot see it in my
physical appearance, but in my
body I have a silent killer.
...I have to take four insulin
shots aday. Most people think
shots hurt a lot, but they do
not. I am used to taking shots.
It is part of my life.
Some very rude kids think
my disease is contagious, but
it is not. It's genetic ...
Now I will talk about tons of
ways diabetes has changed my
life. Besides taking shots, I can-
not have any sugar. Can you
imagine not having a candy
bar, cake or pie? That is the re-
ality for diabetics. I have to go
to the doctor once a month to
have my blood taken. I cannot
eat whenever I want to — only
at certain times. I also get low,
as well as high, blood sugars
all the time. With low blood
sugar, I get symptoms like
shakiness. When I get high
blood sugars. I usually do not
have a lot of energy.
... There are three major
things that you need to find a
cure: hard work, time and
money. Hard work takes a lot
of time. Time needs money —
a lot of money. People get this
money throukh fund-raisers
such as balls, walks and even
overnight events. Most people
are not educated enough about
diabetes.
If 'people do not know about
this disease, they will not sup-
port finding a cure. 1 I
