COPLEY NEWS SERVICE

The best defense against colds
and the flu is a well-stocked med-
icine chest. Some essentials:
• Aspirin or other painkiller
can soothe the achy feeling that
comes with the flu.
• Nasal decongestant sprays
or drops instantly relieve stuffi-
ness by shrinking swollen mem-
branes.
• Decongestants can stop a
cold's runny nose; antihistamines
generally are ineffective against
colds and the flu but often work
wonders as a remedy for an al-
lergy's runny nose, cough and
itchy eyes.
• Throat lozenges or sprays
with a topical anesthetic such as
benzocaine will soothe a sore
throat.
• • Threat a cough with a sup-
pressant that meets your needs.
A dry cough simply needs to be
quieted, a phlegmy cough re-
quires an expectorant formula.
• Eye drops can reduce the
redness and itching that often
comes with allergies. ❑

Ears Don't Come With Volume Controls.

Preconception
Care

Women trying to become preg-
nant should exercise regularly,
avoid crash diets, stop smoking,
avoid alcohol and caffeine and cut
down on stress. It's also smart to
see a doctor before conceiving to
see if there are any other prob-
lems that need to be treated be-
fore pregnancy.

Tooth Time

Save a knocked-out tooth by plac-
ing it in a pH-balanced liquid like
Save-a-Tooth, which keeps tooth
cells alive for 24 hours, long
enough to allow the tooth to be
replanted.

Why Should a Hearing Aid?

Until now, if you wore a hearing
aid, your index finger was almost
always poking at your ear! Adjusting
the volume up — the next moment turn-
ing it down. All just to listen comfortably
to changing loudness in everyday
sound situations.
Now there's MultiFocus! The "hands
free" hearing aid. No volume controls.
No remote controls. MultiFocus uses
microchip technology to automatically
adjust comfortable volume to your
sound environment. Making listening
with MultiFocus easier.. without manual
controls.

If you drink bottled water for bet-
ter health, be sure to check its
source. One-fourth of all bottled
water is actually tap water. A
new Food and Drug Administra-
tion proposal will require truth-
ful labels on bottled water.

Creative Casts

It used to be that the worst thing

about having a broken bone was
having a cast that couldn't get
wet. A new cast liner made of wa-
ter-proof GoreTex allows patients
to shower and swim.
