cover story in U.S. News & World
Report, which is titled "Wait-
ing For the Messiah: The new
clash over the Bible's millennial
prophecies." Polls for the maga-
zine reveal, for instance, that 61
percent of all Americans believe
that Jesus will return to earth —
and 34 percent say he will come
in "a few years."
But the subtext for these
Christian millenarian ideas is
disturbing since they often are
premised on the notion that Je-
sus will return only after a furi-
ous, all-out world war ensues
when "duplicitous world leaders
make peace with Israel, only to
break the pact and persecute the
Jews." As Jeffrey L. Sheler of US.
News wrote, "no single event in
the 20th century has excited
apocalyptic fervor as much as the
rise of the State of Israel in 1948
... In 1950, a . youthfully exuber-
ant Billy Graham told a rally in
Los Angeles, 'Two years and it's
all going to be over.' Since then,
Graham has become more cau-
tious regarding apocalyptic
timetables."
This destruction-of-Israel-as-
prelude-to-Jesus worries James
Tabor, a religion professor at the
University of North Carolina at
Charlotte, who told U.S. News,
"what scares me is that people
who believe that Israel must go
through terrible trouble will
stand by and let them be
crushed."

Eruv Wars

Calvin Trillin has a nine-page
New Yorker article, "Drawing the
Line," about erecting an eruv in
London.
Not that the London venture
entailed any charges and coun-
tercharges of misdeeds and mis-
demeanors.Instead, there was
considerable opposition from
some non-Jewish Londoners. It
got so bad that the opposition was
widely interpreted to be anti-Se-
mitic. Opposition also came from
non-Orthodox Jews, who fought
the eruv because it represented,
for them, a form of creeping ghet-
toization.
Especially informative is Mr.
Trillin's passage in which he
states that "for planning purpos-
es, the people making the appli-
cation [for the eruv] said the
important thing to know about
an eruv is that it exists mainly in

the minds of people who believe
in it." (Italics added.)
By the way, last fall, after six
years after first proposed, Lon-
don officials approved the eruv
project. Rabbi Alan Kimche, who,
according to Mr. Trillin is "to the
left of ultra-Orthodoxy, ... believes
that resistance to the eruv will
melt away only after the eruv is
established and people realize
that physically it hardly exists.
`It's the concept that's dis-
turbing."'
