prayer meeting, they even once
asked me to say a bracha."
Amy Mickel, a law student
from Southfield, is offering legal
help at the clinic. She's there be-
cause she says she wants to work
in an urban setting and she
wants to do more one-on-one
work with her clients.
Does she feel different as a
Jewish woman in the clinic?
"A little bit," she said. "I stand
out. I also go to a Catholic law
school. But everything I do, I do
because I'm interested in it, and
working here gives me the expe-
rience I'll need that will be part
of my life."

Jerry, a Jewish client
"I haven't seen another Jew
here or anywhere else I've been,"
says Jerry while in Mr. Dick-
man's office. "That's part of the
problem. Jews have difficulty ask-
ing for help. The help is here. It's
been the grace of God that led me
here to the Salvation Army.
They don't care if you are Jew-
ish. If anything, coming here,
hearing what they have to say
about Christianity has made me
want to explore Judaism more
when I leave here. I know there's
decency in these people. I know
this is a place of God."

help those in need," said Lt. Col.
William J. Speck, divisional com-
mander of the Salvation Army.
"The Judeo-Christian heritage
teaches us that each human be-
ing is created in the image of'
God," said Rabbi Irwin Groner of'
Shaarey Zedek. "As we reach out,
to feed the needy, this program
established by the men's club is
bearing witness to faith in God
by compassion to His creatures."
For Dr. Diem, it's a real chance
to give himself, his children and
his fellow congregants a real look
at what giving is all about. The
effort to feed the poor, also called
the Shine-A-Light in Darkness
program, isn't just about prepar-
ing meals for faceless individu-
als. In this effort, the Shaarey
