Aish HaTorah of Metro Detroit presents T • H • E Anti-Semitism In Australia Sydney (JTA)— Anti-Semitic in- cidents have risen throughout Australia during the past year, which has also witnessed an ex- pansion.in the activities of Aus- tralian racist groups. These were the grim assess- ments in reports presented ear- lier this month at the annual meeting of the Executive Coun- cil of Australian Jewry. The ECAJ, which maintains a central database of reported anti- Semitic incidents in Australia, recorded a 7 percent increase over the previous year in all types of such incidents from Nov. 1, 1993, to Oct. 31, 1994. The council noted, however, that there was an 18 percent de- crease in reports of violent anti- Semitic incidents. Jews walking to and from syn- agogues in such cities as Ade- laide, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne found themselves the targets of verbal attacks, accord- ing to the council. • The ECAJ reported a nearly 60 percent increase in reports of intimidation and hate mail dur- ing the past year, with Holocaust- denial materials being mailed to Holocaust survivors a particu- larly prominent development. Special Status For Israel Essen, Germany (JTA) — The European Union has declared that Israel should be granted a "privileged status" in its relations with the organization's member states. Meeting here for a summit conference, the leaders of the E.U.'s 12 member states said Is- rael should be given the new sta- tus "because of its high level of economic development." The decision "will profit the general economic development of the Middle East." Israel and the E.U. are cur- rently negotiating the specifics of a final accord that will enable the Jewish state to be associated with the E.U.'s research and develop- ment programs. The negotia- tions, which began in January, are expected to be completed be- fore the end of the year. The new accord will comple- ment a separate trade and coop- eration pact that Israel and the E.U. are currently negotiating in order to update a 1975 agreement between Israel and what was then known as the Common Mar- ket. In recent years, Israel has tried to elevate its trading status to gain better access to the Euro- pean market. Israel is currently suffering a $5 billion trade deficit with the E.U.
