JCC Warned of Handicapped
Parking Code Violations

est Bloomfield Town-
ship is sending notice
to 20 area businesses
and establishments, in-
cluding the Jewish Community
Center, to insist on enforcement
of handicapped parking laws.
Earlier this month, the West
Bloomfield Board of Trustees vot-
ed to mail warning letters to the
JCC and the other organizations
that do not conform with state
handicapped-parking regula-
tions. If violators do not respond
within 90 days, they could receive
a $500 fine.

According to the West Bloom-
field Police Department, because
handicapped-parking spaces in
the Center's South lot (facing
Maple Road) do not have an up-
right handicapped-parking sign,
tickets issued in those spots may
not be valid in court.
Mort Plotnick, executive di-
rector of the JCC, said he has not
been notified on this matter.
"We believe we are in compli-
ance," Dr. Plotnick said. "No one
has ever informed us to the con-
trary. If we are not in compliance,
we will do what is necessary."

The board of trustees took ac-
tion after a handicapped-parking
enforcement volunteer com-
plained that the township has not
enforced regulations at the JCC,
the Orchard Mall and Henry
Ford Community Hospital.
The West Bloomfield Town-
ship Police Department also is on
the list of violators.
Handicapped-parking signs at
the station are brown, and state
regulations require a blue or
white sign with a wheelchair
symbol. Cl
