president of the Yeshiva Student
Council and senior class. A mem-
ber of the Detroit Maccabi Team
_in 1990 and 1992, Yaakov is a Ju-
nior Black Belt in Isshin Ryu
Karate. From 1991 to 1994, he
was awarded the Interscholastic
Basketball Program for out-
standing achievement. Yaakov is
a graduate of Yeshiva Beth Yehu-
da. He is the son of Byron and Jo-

Dr. Mark Diem

Events Planned
DR. MARK DIEM, with a long
record of Jewish civic and pro-
fessional communal involvement,
has been named president of the
Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity. Dr. Diem was named in
recognition of his outstanding
work on behalf of the Universi-
ty over the past several years. Dr.
Diem and his wife Linda have
joined Bar-Ilari's Presidential
Founders Society and have trav-
elled extensively on the Univer-
sity's behalf. Professionally, Dr.
Diem is medical director of the
six clinics of First Care Medical
Center. He is currently vice-pres-
ident of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek Men's Club as well as co-
chairman of the synagogue's So-
cial Action Committee.
The Maple/Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center will feature the
following: On Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m.,
there will be an opportunity for
couples who are part of the blend-
ed family to meet each other at
"The Stepparent Connection."
This is an informal, non-profes-
sional group for the purpose of
discussing issues that arise in a
"Yours, Mine and Ours" situation.
Current Events meets Jan. 5
at 1 p.m. to discuss world and lo-
cal happenings. There is a charge.
Beginning Sign Language, an
effective means of communicat-
ing with individuals who have a
profound hearing loss, will start
Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Max Apple, author of Room-
WILLIAM DAVIDSON was
elected to the board of directors
of the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary. A businessman and distin-
guished community leader, Mr.
Davidson made a gift of $15 mil-
lion to underscore the importance
of Jewish education in the fight
to secure Jewish continuity. The
endowment, which constitutes
the largest gift ever to a single in-
stitution of Jewish education, Will ,
establish the William Davidson
Graduate School of Jewish Ed-
ucation. The school, which will be
located at the Seminary, is sched-
uled to open in September 1996.
