hile Vermont is the
third smallest of Amer-
ican states in terms of
population and acreage,
its Lilliputian size belies its
uniqueness as one of this conti-
nent's most desirable destination
for summer residents, students,
tourists, hunters, skiers, walk-
ers, ice cream fanatics and —
shoppers.
The state boasts one of the
finest language-teaching institu-
tions in North America, Middle-
bury College and equally famous
writers' institute at Bread Loaf.
Bennington College is world fa-
mous for its fine arts program.
Vermont, which at one time
had more cows than people, (it

cover most of the state, are an ex-
tension of the northeastward ex-
tension of the Appalachian
Mountain system; and they pro-
vide a north-south backbone for
Vermont that varies from 20 to
36 miles in width. Snow remains

3,500 feet with Mt. Mansfield at
4,393 feet the highest in ver-
mont).
The Green Mountains, which

drive from the state capital at
Burlington, is the best.
