The state boasts one of the finest language-teaching institu- tions in North America, Middle- bury College and equally famous writers' institute at Bread Loaf. Bennington College is world fa- mous for its fine arts program. Vermont, which at one time had more cows than people, (it still has almost 5000 dairy W cover most of the state, are an ex- tension of the northeastward ex- tension of the Appalachian Mountain system; and they pro- vide a north-south backbone for Vermont that varies from 20 to 36 miles in width. Snow remains on the mountain peaks until the beginning of May. It's the mountain topography, of course, which has transformed Vermont's rural isolation (be- cause of the slow pace of indus- trialization and population decrease in the early part of this century) into a winter skier's Mecca. While there are several fine ski areas, Stowe, a 35-minute farms) is also the headquarters of Ben & Jerry's, the ice cream magnates whose factory in Wa- terbury offers tours of their much publicized facility. Their product is but one of the reasons that the state now attracts millions of vis- itors each year — an impressive number for a state whose entire population is just slightly more than half a million people. Newcomers travel Vermont's modem interstate and not so modern back roads to breathe un- polluted country air and to view oceans of verdure in spring and summer, undulating hillocks, newly restored country barns and majestic mountain ranges (there are 31 mountains in the state with elevations of more than 3,500 feet with Mt. Mansfield at 4,393 feet the highest in ver- mont). The Green Mountains, which drive from the state capital at Burlington, is the best. It not only boasts the world's fastest ski lift but a hotel, Top Notch at Stowe, a five-star world class hostelry with an interna- tional clientele, olympic-size in- door heated swimming pool, luxurious suites, commodious public rooms, snowmobile rides and a view of the adjacent moun- tain with its glistening ski runs. Top Notch at stowe, along with most of the other hotels and mo- tels in the area, provides regular transfers to the nearby ski areas although skiers with cars can find ample parking at the base of the Stowe mountain. It should be not- ed that in spring and summer Top Notch at Stowe provides horseback riding and maps show- ing jogging and walking paths stretching almost five miles in an around the town of Stowe.
