SALE RUNS THROUGH JANUARY Lucian Freud: No removing the warts. stark studio light, devoid of any social status and often with their erotic nature fully exposed. "He brings an unflinching and unsentimental objectivity to the human figure," said Ms. Hilber- ry, whose gallery has been in Birmingham since 1976. The gallery typically displays work of contemporary American painters and sculptors. The etchings are priced at $4,000 to $10,000. "His intensity and bristling of scratch- es (on the copper plate) shows that he looks at life in a lot of dif- ferent ways," Ms. Hilberry said. The Lucian Freud exhibit opened in December alongside the mechanical paintings of New Yorker Bill Komoski. The two ex- hibits could not be more different. Yet, that hardly means that they have nothing in common. Mr. Komoski's grays, vibrant blues and yellows resemble com- puter-enhanced graphics. A world broken into abstract strands of information leaves behind paint and shapes on a canvas. Within the walls of the Su- sanne Hilberry Gallery, Mr. Ko- moski's work serves as a prelude to Mr. Freud's etchings, which are, in turn, an entryway to myr- iad levels of meaning, thought — and yes, analysis. Even psycho- analysis. "They have an intimacy and power that is so opposite to the Komoski paintings, which are about the technological age and the bombardment of visuals im- agery," Ms. Hilberry said. Since fleeing Berlin and im- migrating to England shortly af- ter the Nazis came to power in 1932, Mr. Freud has created art viewed as being everything from honest to glum. "He has such a great regard for the dignity of the human figure that he doesn't feel you have to remove the warts," Ms. Hilbeny said. "What you see is about what you respect about humanity. With great love and care, Lucian Freud accepts what's there." The Lucian Freud Ethhings exhibit will run through Jan. 21, Susanne Hillberry Gallery is lo- cated at 555 South Woodward, Birmingham, (810) 642-S250.
