AUTHENTIC ;=(1- ,) have begun taking beta blockers, drugs developed to control high blood pressure and other heart symptoms. Dr. Nagel believes that taking these drugs to establish a calm, controlled feeling ultimately can result in more anxiety because they interfere with getting to the heart of the real problems. "I feel it's dangerous to give general advice because being on stage or giving a performance means something different to each person," she said. "I do want people to be informed so they can think about their own situations with more depth." As part of her workshops, Dr. Nagel describes the following self- help techniques sometimes ben- eficial in relieving tension brought on by occasional presen- tations: • Realizing that it is not nec- essary to be perfect and under- standing that a person is not a failure if everything does not go exactly as planned. • Replacing negative messages — 'What if I make a mistake?" or "What if the audience doesn't like me?" — with positive state- ments — "I'm prepared, and I know what I'm doing." • Trying relaxation exercises by tensing the major muscle groups one by one and then re- laxing them. For instance, an in- dividual can start by making a fist and then letting go. • Finding a relevant book by an author whose recommenda- tions relate well to the person feeling the anxiety. Some authors focus on diet, while others sug- gest exercise. "The people who come to see me are the ones who have not been helped with these methods," Dr. Nagel said. ❑ Winter Concert For Children The city of Huntington Woods Department of Parks and Recre- ation will open its 1995 Winter Concert Series with The Chil- dren's Theatre of Michigan's pro- duction of "Imagine That."
