attire and shun the dictates of
Egyptian fashion.
Thus, it would seem that the
"fences" that they erected around
themselves, to separate them-
selves and maintain their purity
in an impure society, were no
more — nor less — than their
names, their language and their
clothing.
Pride in their Jewish identity
and heritage, decency, refine-
ment, modesty — these were the
seeds from which sprouted re-
demption, and from which blos-
somed a Jewish nation which
accepted the Torah at Sinai.
Who built and maintained
these fences, ensuring that Jews
remained a proud and decent na-
tion? Then, as now and as al-
ways, the Midrash tells us that
this was the work of the righteous
women who kept their faith and
their people intact through the
long and bitter years of the exile.
The name of the second book
of the Torah is Shemot, which
means "names" (not Exodus). It
is only fitting that the book which
deals with redemption should
bear a name that focuses on the
roots of redemption.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe told us
that our redemption from our
2,000-year exile is imminent. Our
prophets have proclaimed that
this final redemption, with the
coming of Moshiach, will be some-
what comparable to the redemp-
tion from Egypt, only it will be
greater, more miraculous — more
permanent.
Let us make that extra effort
to guard our "name, language,
and garb" and may we witness
the immediate arrival of right-
eous Moshiach.
