quiry was the late Valerian Tri- fa, the Romanian Orthodox archbishop who lived in Grass Lake, Mich. Archbishop Trifa was accused of inciting riots in 1941 in Bucharest, in which hundreds of Jews died. Some of the dead were later hung on meat hooks in a Bucharest slaughterhouse. The government asserted that Archbishop Trifa lied to American officials in Europe when he applied for a perma- nent visa in 1950. His applica- tion papers claimed that he was persecuted by the Nazis. He was granted U.S. citizenship in 1957. Archbishop Trifa denied charges that he lied to obtain citizenship. But he relinquished his citizenship and was deport- ed to Portugal in 1984. He died of a heart attack there in Janu- ary 1987. Peter Quintus of Shelby Township asserted that he was forced to be a guard in the Mai- jdanek concentration camp where 125,000 Jews were per- secuted and killed during World War II. David Griem, Mr. Quintus' attorney, said his client was stripped of his citizenship in 1987 but allowed to stay in the country due to failing health. Mr. Griem has since lost touch with Mr. Quintus. "Closing one's eyes to the his- toric truth and denying the ex- termination of millions of Jews in the gas chambers does not de- serve a lenient sentence," the Supreme Court said as it ordered a new trial for Gunter Deckert, chairman of the right-wing Na- tional Democratic Party. In June, a state court in the southwestern German city of Mannheim found Mr. Deckert guilty on charges of inciting racial hatred. Mr. Deckert had served as the translator at a rally in 1991 for Fred Leuchter, an American Holocaust denier. Mr. Deckert had said that he supported Mr. Leuchter's theories, including statements that the Holocaust never took place. Publicly expressing Holocaust- denial views is a crime under German law. Though finding him guilty, the Mannheim court praised the de- fendant as a "highly intelligent person" of "strong character" and imposed a one-year suspended sentence. 1994 CLOSE OUT SALE TREMENDOUS SAVINGS December 26 - December 30 IP • THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE!!!
