ment allegations that he
was a member of the
Death's Head Battalion at the
Mauthausen concentration
camp.
But in December 1986, six
months after the government
filed a complaint to strip him of
his citizenship, the Clinton
Township man admitted that he
was a guard and had concealed
his involvement when applying
for a visa and later for citizen-
ship.
By July 1987, Mr. Leprich
was no longer a U.S. citizen and
had moved to Canada, said John
Russell, a spokesman for the De-
partment of Justice.
Of three local men who have
been targets of inquiries by the
Department of Justice's Office of
Special Investigations (OSI), two
have died and one has left the
country.
"They usually die, are too sick
to leave or are deported," Mr.
Russell said.
Since the OSI formed in 1979
to investigate Nazi war crimi-
nals, 50 former Nazis who im-
migrated illegally to the United
States have been stripped of

their citizenship. Of those, 42
have been deported; health con-
cerns prevented most of the rest
from leaving.
Attorneys for the men who
were the targets of such in-
quiries in the Detroit area said
their clients simply gave up the
fight because they were old and
tired. Others chose to move to
avoid the expense and aggrava-
tion of a trial.
"Mr. Leprich chose to leave
the country," said William Swor,
his former attorney. "There
comes a point when you can't
fight the government anymore.

sets and all of the time and he
had none of those. It was much
too expensive and much too
draining on his family for him to
continue to fight," Mr. Swor said.
