AARON .KOBERNICK and
BEN GITLER each placed third
in their weight class, helping the
Berkley High School wrestling
team finish second in the Luther-
an East Invitational in Harper
Woods on Dec. 10.
Kobernick wrestled at 112
pounds and Gitler competed at
172 pounds in the Bears' season-
opening meet. Last year, Kober-
nick was a Southeastern
Michigan Association champion.
Even though Berkley did
not have wrestlers in three
weight classes (185-pounder
Bryan Fingeroot, a tri-captain,
missed the meet because of his
brother Daniel's bar mitzvah), the
Bears scored 163.5 points at
Lutheran East. Hazel Park won
the 13-team event with 202.5
points.

ERIC KACZANDER scored five
points in each of the Berkley bas-
ketball team's first two games.
The Bears opened their season
with a 64-44 victory over Royal
Oak Kimball on Dec. 6 and they
whipped Madison Heights Bish-
op Foley 75-33 on Dec. 9.
Against Kimball, Kaczander,
a 6-foot-3 senior guard/forward,
was a perfect 3-for-3 at the free
throw line.
Even though they didn't have
a senior on their roster last year,
the Bears went 16-5 and were a
tri-champion of the Southeastern
Michigan Association along with
Ferndale and Troy.
Ferndale joins Berkley in Di-
vision II of the new Oakland Ac-
tivities Association this winter.
The tough division also includes
Pontiac Central, Southfield-Lath-
nip and West Bloomfield. Oak
Park will join the division next
season after concluding its oblig-

ation with the Suburban Athlet-
ic Conference.

JEFF JACOB scored 15 points
in a losing cause as the Bloom-
field Hills Andover High School
basketball team lost 68-65 to
Bloomfield Hills Lahser in the
season opener on Dec. 6.
Jacob, a junior guard, is ex-
pected to be one of the Barons' top
players this season. Seniors Andy
Daitch and Dan Kukes and 6-1
sophomore Brad Truding also
should make contributions.

DAVID NACHMAN had 11
points and 13 rebounds and Ja-
son Eddleston pulled down eight
rebounds, but they couldn't pre-
vent the Bloomfield Hills Cran-
brook Kingswood High School
basketball team from losing 53-
46 to Redford Thurston in a sea-
son opener on Dec. 6.
Kingswood Cranbrook, which
finished 10-11 last year, returns
all five of its starters including
Nachman and Eddleston. Nach-
man is a 6-foot-5 senior center
and Eddleston is a 6-5 senior for-
ward.

GARON OSEFF scored 13
points and his brother Zeke Os-
eff had three points in the Walled
Lake Western High School bas-
ketball team's 69-59 loss to Red-
ford Union on Dec. 9.

JEREMY LEWIN finished sec-
ond at 275 pounds, helping the
Birmingham Groves High School
wrestling team finish third of 14
squads in the Eccentric Invita-
tional on Dec. 10 at Troy.
The Falcons tallied 146.5
points. They were outscored by
only Troy (195) and Auburn Hills
Avondale (191).
