Today, she balances her design business with teaching adult ed- ucation classes in Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. And, in the near future, Ms. Halpern expects to hear whether she will be com- missioned to paint a two-story canvas for the walls of a hospital in Detroit. "Clearly, this is commercial project, but you can't escape what is genuinely a part of you when you create the art," she said. In the eclectic '90s, amid the trend of creating aesthetically pleasing work and public envi- ronments, Ms. Halpern is setting her sights on hanging her art on office, restaurant and hotel walls, in addition to the homes of pri- vate residents. After all, she's running out of space in her home. ❑ Gallery Mounts Shefman Exhibit The Janice Charach Epstein Mu- seum/Gallery will present the art work of Robert Schefman from Jan. 26 through March 2. A native Detroiter, Mr. Schef- man teaches courses in painting and sculpture at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Associaton and is , a member of the board of direc- tors of Detroit Focus. In his work, Robert Schefman explores the constancy of human values: humankind relatively unchanged in a rapidly changing environment. The current work uses Homer's Odyssey as a metaphor for self discovery. He pushes the spatial illusion by allowing the objects to pile up, conscious of every object's edge, creating as complete a world as he is able. The Janice Charach Epstein Museum/Gallery is located ih the Maple/Drake Jewish Community Center. In the disfigured shoulder and extended hands of Picasso's maternal subject, Ms. Halpern notes a dramatic gesture that she seeks in her paintings. She began as a painter in her teens, following along with her siblings who were involved in a range of the humanities. An ear- ly impressionistic painting with a striking resemblance to the style of Toulouse-Lautrec hangs in the entryway as a reminder of her college years. Since a stint as an arts in- structor in the early 1970s at In- diana State University, where she received a master's degree in art education, Ms. Halpern has focused on one-person art exhibits and gallery shows. 65
