Israeli business life, more and
more people are finding avenues
back into their own specialties,

advances in high technology.
Another factor seen in emerg-
ing markets which is obvious in
Israel is that the stock market
has developed parallel to the
growth in the economy.
There are more publicly trad-
ed companies, and listings of Is-
raeli companies in other stock
markets has also increased. The
impressive developments in both
the economy and the capital mar-
ket have generated growing in-
terest among the international
business community.
Tangible proof of this is visits
to Israel by senior officers of
American Express and European
investment companies.
These decision-makers are ex-
pressing open interest vis-a-vis
Israel, and some of them have ei-
ther started funds specializing in
Israel or are in the advanced
stages of doing so.
The current level of interest
will increase significantly if the
conditions remain positive. As
long as this holds, the question of
whether Israel is or isn't an
emerging market will be less and
less important. ❑

Washington (JTA) — In an effort
to find new funding sources to fos-
ter peace in the Middle East, the
United States has renewed its
push to create a regional devel-
opment bank.
Capitalizing on momentum
from October's economic summit
in Casablanca, the Clinton ad-
ministration will invite 20 coun-
tries to Washington in early
January for talks aimed at set-
ting the framework for a Middle
East Development Bank, ad-
ministration officials say.
Ministers plan to discuss not
only finding and management is-
sues but also new ways to funnel
aid and encourage investment in
the region.
