Export Growth
Will Continue

The expansion of private sector
investments in Israel this year
will ensure further export growth
in 1995, Treasury economic ad-
viser Tsipi Gal-Yam reported.
During the first three-quarters
of the year, investments shot up
19 percent, although there was
a 12 percent drop in the third
quarter.

Foreign Reserves
Take A Tumble

Foreign currency reserves in Is-
rael fell by $309 million last
month despite the $700 million
in U.S. loan guarantees the gov-
ernment raised.
The Bank of Israel reported
that the reserves were $6.689 bil-
lion at the end of November.

Growth Hormone
Case Dismissed

Genentech's case against Israeli
firm Bio-Technology General
(BTG) has been dismissed with
prejudice by the U.S. Interna-
tional Trade Commission (ITC).
Biotechnology pioneer Genen-
tech had tried to prohibit BTG's
import of human growth hor-
mone into the United States.
In March 1993, Genentech
filed a complaint with the ITC,
alleging that BTG had violated
sections of the Tariff Act of 1930
because of the existence of cer-
tain claims in Genentech's U.S.
patents.
A similar complaint was filed
against pharmaceutical giant
Novo Nordisk regarding its hu-
man growth hormone product.
Genentech also moved for a
temporary exclusion order of
BTG products, which was denied
by the ITC in February of 1994.
BTG says it brought to the at-
tention of the ITC administrative
law judge "additional evidence
which had come to light in
Genentech's protracted litigation
with the Eli Lilly Company in-
volving human growth hormone."
