speaking about the Christian
Coalition in a generic sense but
refused to back down from his
harsh criticism of the Christian
right.
"That kind of language de-
means the meaning of the Holo-
caust," said Marshall Wittmann,
the Christian Coalition's chief lob-
byist. "The positive thing for me
is that the Jewish community has
reacted to his statement. rm up-
beat about what this means for
the developing relationship be-
tween the evangelical and Jew-
ish communities."
The Anti-Defamation League
fired off a letter to Mr. Jackson,
terming the comments "inappro-
priate, inaccurate and highly di-
visive."
Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, a
Chicago activist who arranged
the
recent Washington summit be-
tween evangelical and Jewish
leaders, was satisfied that his ef-
fort was apparently paying off.
At the summit, he said, "a
pledge [was] made that we would
fight together any form of Chris-
tian bashing or anti-Semitism.
The reaction of groups like ADL
shows this was a serious
promise."
But many Jewish leaders
sought a low-profile in reacting
to the
new Jackson controversy.
"There was a strong feeling that
Mr. Jackson made a poor choice
of words," said an official with a
major Jewish group in Washing-
ton. "Comparing the Christian
Coalition and Nazis was foolish.
But he may have simply used in-
appropriate language to state a
belief that many of us share: that
the forces of religious intolerance
can lay the groundwork for gen-
uine evil."

That's the beauty of Style magazine. Its enticing,

Golan Troops
Are Opposed

Usually, new organizations go to
great lengths to trumpet the big-
wigs in their ranks. But a new
group in Washington is trying to
keep its list of backers secret.
Last week, the Coalition
Against U.S. Troops on the Golan
Heights announced its presence
with a full-page ad in the New
York Times condemning the pos-
sible use of American troops as
part of an agreement returning
all or part of the Golan Heights
to Syria.
But a phone call to the organi-
zation shed no light on its roster.
"We're not giving out that in-
formation," said a public relations
specialist handling all queries.
The group's address is almost
identical to the address of the
Center for Security Policy, the or-
ganization headed by former as-
sistant defense secretary Frank
Gaffney, a leading opponent of
American troops on the Golan.
