S. Africa's I.A. Maisels

ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR

I

srael Aaron Maisels, a leg-
endary figure in the South
African civil-rights move-
ment and in its Jewish com-
munity, died Nov. 8. He was 89.
Among the survivors are his
son and daughter-in-law, Dr.
Jeffrey and Carol Maisels of
Bloomfield Hills.
Israel Maisels was born in
Johannesbi mg in 1905 and rose
to the rank of major in the
South African air force during
World War II.
He served as president of the
Johannesburg Bar Council in
1952, 1956 and 1958. At the
same time, he led the defense
team that defended 156 persons
of all races, including Nelson
Mandela, accused by South
Africa's newly formed apartheid
government of treason. All were
found innocent.
Mr. Mandela, now president
of South Africa, later was con-
victed on new charges and
served more than 20 years in
prison.
Mr. Mandela last week called
Mr. Maisels "one of the most
outstanding lawyers South
Africa ever produced." Mr. Man-
dela also attended shiva ser-
vices at the Maisels' Johannes-
burg home.
In recent months, Mr. Man-
dela went to a dinner meeting
at the Maisels' so that he could
meet privately with Israel's am-
bassador to South Africa.
Because of his defense of Mr.
Mandela, Mr. Maisels never
was honored by the South
African government with a
judgeship. Neighboring Rhode-
sia gave him that honor in 1961,
but Mr. Maisels resigned the
post in 1963 after that govern-
ment legislated the death sen-
tence for breaking and enter-
ing.
Mr. Maisels was active in
Jewish affairs, serving as a
longtime member of the board
of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
He headed the South African
Zionist Federation, the Board
of Jewish Deputies, the Israel
United Appeal and the United
Hebrew Congregation, and was
a trustee of Israel's Weizmann
Institute.

In the 1960s and '70s, after
returning from Rhodesia, Mr.
Maisels had one of the largest
legal practices in South Africa.
He also served as judge presi-
dent of the appeals courts of

Israel Maisels

Lesotho, Botswana and Swazi-
land.
One of the parliamentary
counselors in the office of Pres-
ident Mandela, O.M. Kathrada,
last week wrote a condolence
letter to the Maisels family. In
it he said, "I was among the 30
treason-trial accused who were
privileged to be defended by Mr.
Maisels from 1952 until our ac-
quittal in 1961. By this time ho
was already a legend, not only
among the legal fraternity but
among all South Africans who
were involved in the struggle
for justice...
"We will always remember
him as a brilliant and fearless
upholder of justice, and a high-
ly principled man who through-
out his career refused to com-
promise his beliefs and values
for the sake of self-aggrandize-
ment."
Mr. Maisels is survived by
his wife, two children in Jo-
hannesburg, one in England,
Dr. and Mrs. Maisels in Bloom-
field Hills, and six grandchil-
dren.
He asked not to be buried
with communal leaders, but in-
stead in an ordinary section of
one of Johannesburg's Jewish
cemeteries. El
