YOU AND YOUR DOCTOR:
PARTNERS FOR GOOD HEALTH

Rabbi Dannel Schwartz

and the Rev. Richter have
worked together for years as
chaplains at William Beaumont
Hospital, where the Rev. Richter
serves as director of pastoral
care. As the hospital's patient
population became more diverse,
both men felt a pressing need to
accommodate varying religious
backgrounds.
'We're hoping that two things
will happen," said the Rev.
Richter. "That they'll find
prayers that are helpful to them
and the healing process. Also,
that in thumbing through the
c, book, they'll see that those who
are not of their religion are peo-
ple who are, on the whole, not a
lot different from the way they
are."

The Rev. James Lyons of the
Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-
Christian Studies in Southfield
wrote the book's introduction. In
it, he commends the efforts of
Rabbi Schwartz and the Rev.
Richter.
"On the Wings ofHealing is de-
c---) signed for hospital patients and
their families who will not only
find comfort in prayers from their
own tradition, but may find help
as they read the prayers of oth-
ers," he writes.
Heliographis, a Birmingham-
based company, published the
book, which sells for $3 in local
gift stores and hospital gift shops.
,3 At Beaumont, it is distributed
free-of-charge to patients. The
first 5,000 copies that have come
off the press were donated by He-
liographis and private contrib-
utors.
The Catholic Pastors Associa-
tion is distributing it to members.
"We're getting a lot of feed-
back, letters and calls," Rabbi
Schwartz says. "The message is:
It doesn't matter how you vote
for God. Prayer in any denomi-
nation helps." ❑
