Holiday Sale

The DIA is celebrating the life
and art of Detroit artist Charles
McGee with a special exhibition
devoted to his work.
Mr. McGee was born in Clem-
son, S.C., and spent his first four
years traveling with his nomadic
parents, and the next six with his
maternal grandparents on their
sharecropper's farm. Those years,
which Mr. McGee refers to as "liv-
ing in nature's corner," gave the
artist a familiarity with the nat-
ural world that has had a lasting
influence on his work. In 1934,
an aunt brought McGee to De-
troit to be formally educated. He
attended Washington Elemen-
tary School and began taking art
classes, first at the Detroit Pub-
lic Library and later at the DIA.
Mr. McGee left high school at 16,
took a variety of jobs and contin-
ued to study painting. His work
was first shown in 1951 at the
DIA's Annual Exhibition for
Michigan Artists.
A variety of educational pro-
grams will be offered in conjunc-
tion with Charles McGee: Seeing
Seventy.
On Jan. 15, Marvin Eisenberg,
,professor emeritus at the Uni-
